Lab Tests for Horses

We offer a wide range of diagnostic tests to evaluate your horse’s internal health, detect early warning signs, and guide treatment decisions. Some tests are run in-house for same-day results, while others are sent to trusted veterinary labs for more in-depth analysis.

Common diagnostic tests include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC evaluates red and white blood cells and platelets to help detect infection, anemia, inflammation, or immune conditions.

  • Serum Chemistry Panel: Various chemistry panels assess liver and kidney function, electrolytes, proteins, and other markers of metabolic health.

  • Coggins Testing (EIA): Required annually for most horses traveling or showing, this test screens for equine infectious anemia.

  • Fecal Egg Count (FEC): FECs help guide responsible deworming protocols by identifying parasite egg levels and reducing resistance.

  • Specialty Tests: Depending on the case, we may recommend hormone testing (ACTH, insulin, T4), muscle enzymes (CK/AST), or infectious disease panels.

On-Farm Imaging & Advanced Diagnostics

On-Farm Imaging & Advanced Diagnostics

Our mobile units are equipped with state-of-the-art imaging tools to support accurate diagnoses without the stress of hauling. We also offer specialized endoscopy services for complex cases involving the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract.

Imaging and advanced diagnostics include:

  • Digital Radiology: High-resolution X-rays provide clear images of the joints, hooves, spine, and teeth. Digital radiology is often used for lameness, injury, prepurchase exams, or chronic conditions.

  • Ultrasound: Ideal for evaluating tendons, ligaments, reproductive health, and internal organs, ultrasound is also used to guide joint injections or monitor healing.

  • Upper Airway Endoscopy: A fiberoptic scope used to evaluate the nasal passages, larynx, pharynx, and trachea, endoscopy is helpful for performance issues, coughing, or abnormal breathing.

  • Gastroscopy: Enables visualization of the stomach lining to diagnose gastric ulcers—a common and often missed cause of behavior and performance issues. Black Brook is one of the few in the region offering mobile gastroscopy.
